The weird and wonderful world of running beach huts✨

Hi, I'm Jo. I've loved beach huts for almost 20 years.

Six years ago, when I was 48, I started hiring out our family hut in Essex, a bit to cover the costs and a bit to share my love of hut life.

I never imagined it would become my full-time job, but here we are, six years and five huts later!

I thought you'd like to see what this little job actually involves, so I'm taking you along to the huts with me each week.

This week, I've been getting the Mersea huts ready for autumn. Out with the summer parasols, in with the blankets and hot chocolate. 🍂

And here are three things I love about the huts in autumn.

1. The quieter beaches. 🍂

Just enough people around for a bit of people watching, but with a much slower feel to the day.

2. Getting outside feels even better. 🍂

There's something about wrapping up, heading out for a walk, then coming back to the hut to warm up and get cosy.

3. The food. 🍂

Autumn is the sweet spot for fish and chips or bacon sandwiches. I don't know what it is, but when it's a little bit cooler, having something warm to eat feels extra special. If only Instagram could do the smell!

I don't think I'm going mad. Are you with me, or are you strictly a summer person? 🍂 ☀️

Completely by accident, built a beach community? ✨

Let me tell you the story.👇🏼

Just over a year ago, we decided to try a breathwork session at the beach hut. For fun, really. No plan what so ever.

My friend Gabrielle @breathwithgabrielle is a super breathwork coach, so we got a bunch of friends together, gave it a go and it was just insanely good. ✨

“We should do this every month!,” we said. And that's how Breath at the Beach started.✨

And here we are with October's session from this week. ✨

Look at that sky! ☀️ Sandwiched between two stormy days, naturally. Mim @merseamudcakes calls me the weather witch because it always seems to happen. ✨Compliments to my weather department…

If you've never been, Gabrielle leads a 40-minute breathwork session on the beach, then we all stay at the hut for a good old chat, hot drinks and Mim's brownies (now an integral part). This week there were 11 of us. ✨

I really didn't expect that first session to turn into all this. We've breathed, we've laughed a lot and we've even been in for a dip… I'm so proud of the little community we've built. ✨

And as I write this, we're planning a Christmas one. 🎄

It's a couple of hours to do something just for you. An hour of guided breathwork with the lovely @breathewithgabrielle, followed by a drink, a chat and Mim's @merseamudcakes brownies, because great cake is an important part of wellbeing, right?

No need to know anything about breathwork or bring anything. Just come as you are or if you'd rather bring a friend, even better.✨

Inevitably, you spend more time indoors as the days get shorter, so I really appreciate the time I do spend outside. There’s something about wrapping up, getting out for a walk, then coming back to the hut to warm up and get cosy. And if you have dogs, it’s a brilliant time of year to get everyone out.

3. The food.🍂

Autumn is the sweet spot for fish and chips or bacon sandwiches. I don’t know what it is, but when it’s a little bit cooler, having something warm to eat is extra special, if only insta could do the smell!
